“The Gumboot Beat” is a dedication to my construction team — the men who have stood with me since 2005 and helped build projects in remote parts of Africa where there were no roads, no facilities, and no comfort. Just bush, sky, diesel engines, and the decision to make it work.
This song honours a real “high performance” team: highly skilled, multi-skilled, and humble enough to do anything that needs doing. From day one it starts with clearing the bush, marking out the first lines with string and pegs, breaking soil, setting foundations, steel reinforcement, concrete pours — often at night when it’s cooler. They’ve worked through heat, dust, and malaria. They’ve carried the cost of long travel, months away from family, and nights sleeping on airport floors. Yet they kept the rhythm going until the job was done and the keys could be handed over.
The “gumboot beat” is the sound of work becoming music: boots on ground, hammer on steel, chisel on rock — a working gang that moves like one body. It’s also about purpose beyond the build: new plants for gold, copper, iron ore, graphite — projects that create jobs, open doors for communities, and give children a future that didn’t exist when the ground was still bush.
This is not a brag song. It’s a gratitude song. A salute to teamwork, sacrifice, and dignity in hard labour. A reminder that legacy isn’t built by one person — it’s built by brothers who show up, sweat together, and refuse to quit.

Colossians 3:23–24; Psalm 90:17
This song is rooted in the dignity of work done with heart and faith. Colossians teaches us to work wholeheartedly, not for human approval only, but as service to the Lord — and that gives meaning even to hard labour in dust, heat, and long nights. Psalm 90:17 is the builder’s prayer: “Establish the work of our hands.” The hope is this: when a team builds with excellence, unity, and safety, God can use that work to bless families, uplift communities, and create futures where there was once only bush.
Intro (guitar + drum pulse)
No road, no line… just bush and sky
We draw the first line with our feet
From the Philippines to red African dust
Men of steel, hearts of faith
This song is for you
Verse 1
Dust at dawn, and the forest breathes
First light finds us on our knees
Pull that string, we mark the ground
Hammer rings, chisel keeps the sound
From a sketch on a paper page
To a cut in the African soil
Where there once was only bush
We raise futures on our knees
Pre-Chorus
Time on the board, cost in our sight
Safety in hand – all home safe tonight
All home safe tonight
All home safe tonight
Chorus
Hear the gumboot beat – hammer and steel
Boots on the ground, the rhythm is real
Mozambique, Mali, Guinea, Congo heat
We make it stand on a gumboot beat
We make it happen – name we’ve earned
“One for all, All for one”, written in dust and concrete
This is our story in a gumboot beat
This is our story in a gumboot beat
Verse 2 (Tagalog)
Walang trabahong maliit sa’min
Tali bakal, buhos semento rin
Lamig ng gabi, kumagat lagnat
Laban malaria, tuloy ang lakad
Larawan nila sa bulsa ko
Pamilya kong malayo pero totoo
Airport floors, malamig na sahig
Para sa bukas, tiis at sabay sig
Chorus (French variation)
Entends le pas des bottes, marteau, acier
Bottes sur la terre, le rythme est vrai
Mozambique, Mali, Guinée, Congo aussi
On fait tenir ce rêve au gumboot beat ici
Verse 3
Bush to beacon, the keys in hand
Dreams now stand on this hard won land
Children watching where dust once lay
Engines singing a brand new day
Work in the valley where none before
Bread on the table, a stronger door
We shake hands, see the pride inside
We did it together, we did it right
Pre-Chorus 2
Count it down – final bolt, last light
We did it together, we did it right
We did it right
We did it right
Chorus (return)
Hear the gumboot beat – hammer and steel
Boots on the ground, the rhythm is real
Mozambique, Mali, Guinea, Congo heat
We make it stand on a gumboot beat
We make it happen – name we’ve earned
“One for all, All for one”, written in dust and concrete
This is our story in a gumboot beat
This is our story in a gumboot beat

Outro / Blessing
Water of life keeps flowing free
God’s good hand over you and me
To every man who’s flown since two zero zero five
who slept on airport floors
fought the fever
cleared the bush
poured the night concrete
This legacy stands on your gumboot beat
Salamat. Thank you. Dankie
Hear the gumboot beat… still in our feet
