“Word Wie Jy Is” started with an image that wouldn’t leave me: the Koup Karoo, the Swartberge almost “holding” the land, and somewhere high up a small stream — the Dwyka — beginning to flow. Not dramatically. Just faithfully. And yet on that short route it meets rocks, logs, trees, and roots that try to press it in, slow it down, force it into a narrow channel. But it doesn’t stop. It becomes wiser. It flows around, over, and through. It keeps going.
That picture reminded me: life doesn’t end because obstacles appear — life learns to flow. And that’s exactly what many people need today, because we all face seasons that squeeze us: disappointment, other people’s opinions, financial pressure, grief, fatigue, relationships that change. Over time, a danger creeps in: you survive, but you stop flowing. You harden. You go cold. You lose hope.
This song was also inspired by a powerful devotional (used with permission) that gave me two Karoo images that locked into my spirit:
