“He Wakes Over Me” is the international English release of my Afrikaans song “Hy Waak Oor My.” I created it for friends and listeners who don’t understand Afrikaans but still need the message — because the promise behind this song doesn’t belong to one language. It belongs to every weary heart.
Psalm 121 has always felt like a road song to me. Not something you sing after everything is fixed, but something you sing while you’re still walking — still tired, still uncertain, still trying to stay steady. That’s why the imagery is grounded: a quiet road under fading lights, long gravel stretches between small towns, distant lights on the horizon, and that moment when the world feels bigger than your breath.
The song was born out of the kind of week where your body is tired but your mind won’t slow down. You do that familiar scan — left and right — looking for certainty, looking for something to hold onto, looking for someone to say, “You’re safe.” And you realize how anxiety tries to drag tomorrow into today: solve everything now, carry everything now, predict everything now.
This is where Psalm 121 becomes shelter. It doesn’t promise the world will suddenly go quiet. It promises God does not drift. He doesn’t lose focus. He doesn’t fall asleep while you wrestle through the night hours. The chorus is intentionally repetitive because fear repeats itself. Thoughts loop. So I needed a truth that could outlast the loop: He watches over me.
I kept the Karoo atmosphere in the lyric because the Karoo teaches you to look up. The horizon is wide and honest. You feel small — but in a healing way — because you remember: you were never meant to carry the sky. God does. And yet He still holds your heart.

Psalm 121:1–8
Psalm 121 is a steady promise for anxious and weary days. It teaches us to lift our eyes beyond what overwhelms us and remember where help truly comes from: the Lord, Maker of heaven and earth. The Psalm repeats what we most need to hear when fear loops — God does not sleep, He does not slumber, and He will not let your foot slip. This song is a confession of trust: even when the road is quiet and shadows grow, your Keeper stays awake over your life.
Verse 1
When the road lies quiet under fading lights
And the world feels bigger than my breath
When the news loads fear into my heart
And I wonder if You still see me
On the ground I watch the shadows grow
But Your Spirit whispers deep in me
Look up, My child… you’re not alone
Pre-Chorus
And I know, I know—though I can’t see it now
Your hand holds the heavens… and my heart
Chorus
I lift my eyes to the mountains
Where will my help come from
My help comes from the Lord
Maker of heaven and earth
You will not let my feet slip
You don’t sleep, You never slumber
My help comes from the Lord
He watches over me, He watches over me
Verse 2
When I travel those long gravel roads
Between small towns and far-off lights
When sirens cry again in the city
And the world looks more broken than before
When the answers feel distant and still
You draw near like a soft Karoo breeze
And You whisper: “Do not fear—I’m here”
Pre-Chorus 2
And I know, I know—though I feel so small
Your arm is not too short to hold me
Bridge
You are the shade at my right hand
You are my shield in the darkest night
You keep my going out and coming in
You hold my life within Your hands
You don’t grow tired, You don’t look away
You guard my soul when I can’t explain
You are my Keeper, You are my strength
The One who stays
Final Chorus
I lift my eyes to the mountains
I know where my help comes from
My help comes from the Lord
Maker of heaven and earth
You will not let my feet slip
You don’t sleep, You never slumber
My help comes from the Lord
He watches over me, He watches over me
He watches over me, He watches over me
He watches over me
